Heavy Liquids

Typically used to separate substances based on their density, heavy liquids can be adjusted to have a specific density that is greater than that of most other materials.

Heavy liquids are dense, highly viscous fluids that are used in a variety of scientific and industrial applications.

  • Bromoform (CHBr3) is a brominated organic solvent, colourless liquid at room temperature, with a high refractive index, very high density, and sweet odour is similar to that of chloroform. It is a trihalomethane and is one of the four haloforms. Bromoform's high density makes it ideal for separation of mineral ores by means of preferential flotation.
  • LST Heavy Liquid is a low-toxicity, fully recyclable substitute for brominated organic solvents with a low viscosity and excellent thermal stability. LST Heavy Liquid can be used up to a density of 2.9 g/cm3 at room temperature, and up to a density of 3.6 g/cm3 at elevated temperatures.
  • SPT Heavy Liquid is a low-toxicity, fully recyclable substitute for brominated organic solvents with a low viscosity and excellent thermal stability. SPT is a highly transparent, yellowish-green solution, available in densities of up to 3.0 g/cm³ and can be configured as a pH-neutral solution.
  • Tetrabromoethane (C2H2Br4) is a brominated organic solvent, colourless or yellow transparent liquid at room temperature, with a high refractive index, very high density, and sweet odour is similar to that of chloroform. The high density makes it ideal for separation of mineral ores by means of preferential flotation.
